How to setup a chess Board : A Simple Guide
Setting up a chessboard correctly is essential to playing the game. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Position the Board:
- Place the chessboard between you and your opponent so that each player has a white square on their bottom-right corner. This ensures the correct orientation of the board.
Arrange the Chess Pieces:
Back Row (closest to each player):
- Rooks: Place the rooks in the corners of the back row (a1, h1 for white; a8, h8 for black).
- Knights: Place the knights next to the rooks (b1, g1 for white; b8, g8 for black).
- Bishops: Place the bishops next to the knights (c1, f1 for white; c8, f8 for black).
- Queens: Place the queen on the remaining central square of the back row, matching the color of the queen to the square (d1 for white queen, d8 for black queen).
- Kings: Place the king on the last remaining square (e1 for white king, e8 for black king).
Front Row:
- Pawns: Place all pawns in a straight line on the second row for white (a2, b2, c2, etc.) and the seventh row for black (a7, b7, c7, etc.).
Double-check the Setup:
- Make sure the back row has the pieces in this order from left to right: rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook.
- The queens should be placed on the squares that match their color, and the pawns should be in front of the other pieces.
That’s it! You’re ready to start playing. The white player always moves first.
